How can L&D teams develop the right skills so we are equipped for the future?

News | 02.06.2023

In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, the skills gap has become an ever-growing concern for organisations. Change, even if positive, can be complex and takes time to embed the message into the hearts and minds of the workforce and persuade them that it will benefit them.

As the digital landscape rapidly changes, it’s essential that L&D teams become agile, versatile and ready to support colleagues with these emerging technologies and processes.

We recently attended ‘Learning Technologies 2023’ in London, which is one of the leading L&D events of the year. The conference highlighted many different themes that are important for L&D leaders to consider - including being prepared for a big skills shift in the future.

A recent report from City & Guilds stated that over half of UK businesses (56%) face some kind of barrier to meeting their skills and talent needs (Skills Index).

Keeping on top of this essential conversation

There are many skills that we might need in the next 5-10 years that aren’t needed now. We recently discussed this ever-changing conversation with Donald Taylor (Chair of the Learning Technologies Conference). Through these discussions, we realise the profound role of digital learning in accelerating skills development and empowering learners to take ownership of their training. Alongside this, it’s essential to recognise how data and analytics can enable organisations to track and plan their skills needs and close the skills gap.

So, how can we best prepare our workforces for these eventual essential skills?

Utilising learning technology and content design

24% of the attendees at Learning Technologies we spoke to said that ‘building employee skills’ is their biggest challenge for 2023.

By utilising learning technology and effective content design, we can work with you to ensure your employees are equipped and ready for future skills shifts.

The rise of advancing technologies is not the only factor to consider here. Market demands have changed since the Covid pandemic and the rise of the hybrid workforce. Employees are now more able (and willing) to work for international companies due to remote working.

A 2019 Harris poll of 1,433 employees cited lack of development as one of the most common reasons for leaving a job, second only to dissatisfaction with their pay. We know that personal development is often one of the main factors employees choose to stay with their organisation and this is an essential investment in the current and future climate.

How to stay competitive

As L&D leaders, we must recognise our impact and influence in building the required skills and knowledge to motivate our employees and ensure our organisations are on top of their game.

One of the best ways to bridge the skills gap is to embed customised content and engaging learning platforms into your learning strategy. And by using data-led products like Kineo Analytics that give you genuine insights and meaningful ways to make positive change whilst learning from what hasn’t worked.
